Host me forever
What is the possible perpetuity of our UGC? Could our writings live on the Web forever? Some people say the only way to go if you want literary Web immortality is to plunk down for your own hosting every month. But as we all know, even the most fervid bloggers lapse into unconsciousness, domains expire, and words that were once deposited upon the Web with such deliberation by their authors disappear and are replaced by parked domain monetization pages every day. Meanwhile, there are all kinds of sites that literally live on what they let people post for free. Communities create social tensions and social tensions drive participation which drives pageviews. In that light it occurred to me that it is rather remarkable that the best of them (the ones that really foster, embrace and understand UGC, like Yelp) have undertaken the commitment to host my drivel on their nickel forever. If that is indeed one of the promises implicit in the stature of a company like Yelp, then that’s really very cool.
